What is Slow Living?

Stress. Overwhelm. Busy, Rush, and Hustle. These are very common words, and a short time ago, I was letting them run my life… and I was getting sicker and sicker. Most days you could find me frazzled & stressed out as I tried to do All. The. Things.

“I’m SO overwhelmed!!! 😭😭😭 was my go-to explanation when Alex asked how my day went. I was SO busy. The ironic thing is, that the more I rushed around, the less I seemed to accomplish. My days were filled with frustration as the busy and stress cycled around.

What is Slow Living

It's shocking to see these pictures. You wouldn't know it, but I was SO stressed the day we had these family photos done. I just kept pasting on a smile every day.

How did all the other women on Instagram and Pinterest have it together? (you know we've all had those thoughts... 😂) One day, I sat down for quiet time with my journal in my lap. I heard a still, small voice whispering “Slow down.” I had NO clue what that looked like, but my health seemed to be the best place to start.

It took months... but Slow Living became a part of my life, and I began to feel like my “cup” was full (instead of empty).

So…

What is slow living?

To me, Slow Living could also be called “Intuitive" or "Purposeful" living. It’s basically about slowing down. It's about stopping the busy and creating space for what you want (and need!) in your life.

Slow Living is a very flexible idea, and it's going to look different for every single person. The best way to find our own version of Slow is to learn to recognize what we need. To figure out what brings us calm and rest. (and what keeps us in the hamster wheel of chaos.)

Slowing down is about stopping the busy so you have time to re-evaluate what you need, want, & long for to live a good life.

What is Slow Living

The beauty of Slow is that there are no rules. 🙌🏻 Slow living brings freedom from busy, but only in a way that makes sense to YOU.

So...  you might be wondering: “If there are no rules for Slow Living, where do I even start?”

Here are 3 starting points to seeking Slow Living as a way of life:

Think about your Ideal Day:

Dream big! What would the perfect day look like? Smell like? Feel like? Who would you spend it with? Will you regret binging on Netflix instead of starting that new craft project? How you spend your days is how you live your life.

Honestly, I’m really good at seeing the “big picture” of the life that I want… but that daily application is hard for me. Often I will realize I just wasted 2 hours on my phone that I could’ve spent working towards something more lasting.

Take Care of Yourself!

The very first thing I did was begin to take care of myself. I know a lot of women naturally tend to neglect themselves while taking care of everyone else. (This is a big weakness of mine!) Are you eating enough? Getting enough sleep?

It's time to soak in the tub. Splurge and let yourself watch that Jane Austen movie. If you have little ones at home, get a babysitter (or a grandma!) so you can visit a cafe in peace. If you take care of yourself, you will be better equipped to take care of everything else.

Listen to your Intuition.

The most important part of Slow Living is listening to your intuition. We usually have a natural understanding of what we need. but tend to ignore it because of all the Busy.

Start trying to listen to yourself in stressful situations. If you find yourself wearing cranky-pants, slow down. Think about how you got those pants on… and how to get them off. The more you listen, the more in tune you will be to the things that trigger stress and frustration in your life.
