A Simple Mindset Shift about NOT taking Ownership…

I learned this simple mindset shift about NOT taking ownership YEARS ago from my Nana Anne, and it has made a huge impact on my life. In this blog post, I’m sharing why you SHOULDN’T take ownership of the struggles in your life — and what you can try instead.

Last week I was chatting with a friend in my DM's, and she said this:

“I don't want my anxiety to get the best of me…”

Sounds great, right? But I noticed a SIMPLE little word that really bugged me… “MY." My anxiety. Seems harmless enough. But when you add the word “My” to anything you're struggling with, you automatically take ownership of it.

And, if you own it, it will own YOU.

Now, please hear me: I'm not saying this makes anxiety (or any struggle!) magically disappear. I wish it did! But this is a CRUCIAL mindset shift to make, because you are divorcing yourself from the idea that it's YOURS, and that you're going to be stuck with it forever.

My great-grandmother actually told my Mom this when she was struggling with lupus. She told her “Don’t you DARE own that honey, and it can’t own you.” 🤯 (I guess mindset coaching runs in the family! 🥰 ) That simple wisdom has stuck with me for my whole life.

You have a lot more control over your identity than you think you do. And you can absolutely choose to identify with the struggles you have — but I'm willing to bet that's going to make you focus on them MORE.

OR, you can choose to define yourself in new ways: “I'm a recovering people-pleaser!” “I won't let this anxiety get the best of me.” The way you choose to speak over your life makes a HUGE difference in how you LIVE your life. So, to sum it all up:

WORDS MATTER. 🌿
