Why do you want to Journal?

Do you want to start journaling? If you’ve got a stack of half-filled journals sitting on your bookshelf, it might be time to ask yourself a really good question: WHY do you want to journal? Keep reading if you’re ready to find clarity on WHY you want to start a journaling practice.

Every time I write or share about journaling, I get the same questions:

“How do you know what to write?” and,

“I’ve tried to journal, but I’m not consistent…”

Why do you want to Journal?

So: Before you think about “what to write,” you need to decide WHY you’re journaling. (PSA: there are so many different reasons for you to journal!) Knowing WHY you want journal is just as helpful as knowing what to write.

Once you know the “WHY” behind your journaling practice, WHAT you write will be so much easier for you! So if you really want to journal, let’s ask a few questions to help you find your “WHY”! (And get you out of the “stack of pretty, empty journals” club!)

you need to decide why you’re journaling.

Why do you want to Journal?

  • What draws you to journaling? (It is the pretty books? Maybe you think it should feel calming and relaxing?)

  • What do you hope to accomplish with a journaling practice? (A more focused prayer life? Taking notes from podcasts or books you’re reading?)

  • What’s your biggest struggle with journaling consistently? (Maybe you keep getting distracted, or you never know what to write when you sit down.)

  • What’s going on emotionally, mentally, or spiritually right now? (Journaling is a great outlet for all the thoughts and feels!)

You might get to the end of these questions and realize that you actually DON’T want to journal — and that’s okay! But if you’re still feeling a tug to journal… Knowing your reason(s) for journaling can help ground your practice and make it feel more manageable.

I use journaling as a tool on a daily basis. It’s how I pray, how I detangle and de-clutter my thoughts and emotions, and how I create and flesh out ideas!
