2020 has been… INTERESTING (to say the least!). The levels of crazy & bizarre event that have happened this year is almost unparalleled. The memes that have been made about this year should make it to the World Records. And I think EVERYONE is just a little nervous to see what happens when the calendar rolls over to 2021. (Brings me back to my childhood… Y2K, anyone? 😆)
Yeah, it’s been ROUGH year! But here’s the thing: You shouldn’t walk away from this year until you REVIEW IT.
And if that has you thinking: “You must be CRAZY if you think I’m going to look back on this year and re-hash EVERYTHING that happened!” Hang with me… a year-end review isn’t as bad as it sounds. There’s a REALLY GOOD reason you should do this process… and it’s not hard!
(If you’re reading this after the new year; this process doesn’t just have to be for the end of the year! You can do it after each quarter, or after your kids graduate homeschool 2021. 🙌🏻 Or maybe you’ve just walked through a really tough season in your life, and you are ready for a fresh start.)
Whatever the reason, you should give the year-end review a try… & HERE’S WHY:
3 Reasons you should do a Year-End Review.
Your brain only remembers the BAD STUFF.
Have you ever gotten to the end of a week, and thought, “I did NOTHING!” 😩 Then, you look at your list, and all you can see is everything you failed at and what you didn’t get done. This is a SAFETY MECHANISM.
Your brain is actually trying to keep you SAFE! It’s reminding you of what went wrong because it’s hoping you won’t repeat the same mistakes. This safety-mechanism isn’t always a bad thing, either; It’s the reason you know not to touch a hot burner. It’s also the same reason that you remember Every. Single. Thing. your spouse has ever done wrong when you argue.
But this safety-mechanism also crops up when you look back on the past year. There’s a LOT of mistakes, mess-ups, and mishaps in the past 365 days! Your brain wants you to be safe, and healthy in the new year, so it’s going to remind you of every crappy thing that you did or experienced.
You have to REMIND your brain of the Good Stuff!
Since your brain only wants to remind you of the BAD STUFF (see above!), you need to work to REMIND yourself of the good! Studies show that you are actually in charge of approximately 40% of your own happiness - which means you can CHOOSE the good!
A year-end review is a great way to remind your brain of everything that you’ve learned, everything you’ve survived, and all the reasons you have to be thankful and grateful. Trust me — you’ll soon see all the reasons why you should be proud of yourself!
You need to LET GO of all the Crappy Stuff!
This is by-far my FAVORITE. Friend: If you don’t make space to let go of all the crap you’ve been through for the past year, you’re going to carry it with you. You’re going to carry the fears, the lies, and the mindsets that have held you back.
I want you to live INTENTIONALLY, friend! I want you to enjoy every moment, and live your life on purpose. So why not intentionally LET GO of the crap from this past year? It’s time to name the things that you hated, struggled with, or were just generally awful from last year, and then LET THEM GO. (And now you’re probably singing the Elsa song. You’re welcome. 😁)
